Day trip to Plitvice lakes from Split, Omis and Makarska

Travel with us to Plitvice Lakes National park, which was granted UNESCO's World Heritage status since 1979. The beauty of the National Park lies in its sixteen lakes, inter-connected by a series of waterfalls, and set in deep woodland. The National Park covers a total area of 300 square kilometres, whilst the lakes join together over a distance of eight kilometres.

How whole trip looks like:

After pick up and drive of approximately 3 hours from Split (3.5 hours from Omis, or 4 hours from Makarska), we will reach our starting point which is at the north entrance of the park (Entrance 1). Sightseeing is circular, and includes a walk through the limestone canyon of the “Lower Lakes”, an electric-boat ride across the largest of the Plitvice lakes – Lake “Kozjak”, a panoramic train ride, and a walk along the top of the canyon’s east side all the way back to starting point at “Entrance 1”.

You will also see the impressive 78 meters high “Great Waterfall” and the “Sastavci” waterfalls, the beautiful dark blue lakes of “Novakovića Brod”, “Kaluđerovac”, “Gavanovac” and “Milanovac”, as well as the vastness of Lake Kozjak.

The Park is also recognised for its many species protected by the Nature Protection Act of Croatia (22 species), of which we should single out the lady’s slipper – the most beautiful orchid in Europe. The 157 bird species recorded so far is the third largest population of birds among the national parks of Croatia. Particularly interesting is the white-throated dipper – a rare bird dependent on clean aquatic habitats.

The features of the Plitvice Lakes and their tributaries are generally typical of trout-inhabited alpine waters. However, allochthonous populations of chub and rudd have significantly suppressed the brown trout, indigenous to these lakes. In addition, at least four more species have been proved to inhabit the waters of Lake Kozjak.

Whole sightseeing program takes around 4 hours, after which You will have time to have a drink or lunch (own expense) in one of the many nearby restaurants.
